About Rumi

Rumi Tominaga is a culturally American, Japanese citizen who has lived in Los Angeles, New York City, and Memphis before settling in Tokyo. Since earning her BFA with a concentration in sculpture, she has spent the past decade producing film and television projects centered on marginalized voices— creating storytelling spaces that explore multicultural identity within provocative visual contexts.

Her interactions with storytellers around the world continue to inform her personal artistic investigations into privilege, strength, and vulnerability. Now based in Tokyo, Rumi’s practice draws on her evolving sense of place and the ideological shifts that come with it.

Her materials, like her experiences, have shifted over time: from industrial cables, wires, and found films in large-scale installations, to welded discarded metals, and now to vintage magazines sourced locally and abroad. These mixed media collages serve as both personal and cultural excavations, reflecting a layered understanding of identity and history.
